Crossing Delancey (1988)

An ethnic Jewish love story taking place in the Lower East Side, NYC.  Featuring Amy Irving, and Peter Riegert as Sam the pickle man.  Very charming movie with an excellent performance from Yiddish stage actress Reizl Bozyk as bubby. (that's a Jewish grandmother).  Sylvia Miles gives a high-octane performance as the pushy yenta.  As she slobbers away on chicken and does the matchmaking hard sell at the kitchen table, you know you're on to something good here.  Very gentle and smart story.  See it.  Would it be so wrong bubby?

This is one of my favorite movies of the 80s. Very understated with real (although at times cartoon-y) characters. Although Izzy's self-absorption and pretension is a little too well-played at times. I wanted to throttle her a couple of times. Peter Riegert gives one of my favorite performances ever. He's dignified just by living his life without pretension and artifice.

Oh, and the wine billboard made me plotz!

Very well-said goggles-- I liked Riegert for this very reason too
